Bill Belichick is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history and is the NFL’s longest tenured active coach.  He has the third most regular season wins of any coach (through the 2022 season), holds the record for the most playoff wins and also holds the record for the most Super Bowl victories (six)! He was named NFL Coach of the Year for 2003, 2007 and 2010.

Clearly, many people have talent.  Some have ambition.  Some have drive. Others have the “smarts.” And still others have all of these capabilities and more.  But as Belichick points out, “talent” is, certainly not the whole story.

To take his quote a little further, Merriam Webster defines character as “one with moral excellence.”  Oxford describes the word as “strength and originality in a person’s nature.”  And the Cambridge dictionary makes reference to “character” as the “quality of being determined and able to deal with difficult situations.”

No matter how you decide to use words to define “talent” and “character,” one thing is for sure………..definitions may vary but everyone recognizes these two words when they see them!

Born exactly 71 years ago this month, Bill Belichick has effectively and simply described the essence of leadership – both talent and character!

Perform Better!
